I’m often asked by my students, “How do I make my feet look like yours?” While I wish there were a quick answer, it’s a bit more complex than a single exercise. Some dancers (like me) may naturally have more flexible feet due to genetics - my joints are hypermobile, meaning my muscles, tendons, and ligaments allow more range of motion than most. But that’s only part of it. I’ve also spent years strengthening and learning to articulate my feet. The good news? You can improve your feet through proper stretching and mindful technique, just like training for a split or lengthening your legs in tendu. In this video, I break down the difference between lengthening your toes versus crunching them, and share a great method I learned from my Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) training that can help you stretch the foot muscles and gain mobility. In This Video, You’ll Learn: 💙 How articulating and using your feet to their fullest potential in class can improve their appearance 💙 The difference between lengthening your toes and crunching them 💙 A PBT-inspired exercise to help stretch the muscles in the feet to improve flexibility and mobility 00:00 Introduction 00:30 Why we point our toes 01:26 Lengthen vs Curled 01:52 Exercise to practice at home 02:43 Foot flexibility tip 05:46 Final thoughts I’d love to hear from you!
