I've wanted to redo my YYZ cover on my channel for quite a while now with some synths included and a bass playthrough more representative of how I generally play the song. This seemed like a good time to do it for a couple of reasons: Firstly, I passed 500 subscribers on my channel (thanks so much to everyone!) which is awesome. Playing Rush basslines is just about my favourite thing to do, and it's been great connecting with lots of the other Rush/Geddy fans out there who watch/comment on my videos. Secondly, I had the pleasure of seeing Geddy and Alex perform this song last week at Wembley which is something I never thought I would get to see again. Although it wasn't the same without Neil (who is of course irreplaceable), just seeing those two guys play music live one more time meant a lot to me and if that is the last chance I get to see them perform live, there would be no other song I would have wanted to see Geddy play more than YYZ. It's probably the bassline I have played more than any other and is one that will always be fun and challenging for as long as I play bass! This is the Moving Pictures 40th Anniversary live version of YYZ from 1981. I had wanted to play along to something from this album since it was released and I liked the tempo they played YYZ at on this tour so chose that recording to play along to. I also cut the drum solo out (hope drummers are not offended :)) as best I could. I try and blend in lots of different live versions when I play through this and have some favourite fills from a lot of different versions that Geddy played. A couple of Exit Stage Left type fills, some of the Different Stages flamenco rhythms, the Snakes and Arrows era flamenco stuff under the guitar solo etc. I've never really felt sure what Geddy plays on the little bass solo bits, so I guess I just have my 'interpretation' (which changes every now and again!) of each little bit. I particularly love how he played them on the Different Stages recording so that's always been what I've tried to work out. Synth parts are pretty basic, just a strings/sawtooth sound from the M1 for the pedal parts, and a slightly squelchy sawtooth on my K3 for the main synth chords. Long text, but lots to say about one of my favourite songs and bass parts! Hope you enjoy and thanks again to everyone for watching all my stuff! (Little clips of animated Neil are from a really old video on Youtube I remembered seeing. It's an animated playthrough of the drum part which I always thought was a pretty cool video) Gear used: Fender Jazz bass (Geddy Lee sig) with Rotosound Swing bass 66 strings Tech 21 GED-2112 Sansamp Trace Elliot GP12X preamp Palmer PDI-05 Kawai K3 Korg M1 Roland PK-5 pedals
