Hey girls! I’m Perrine. A dive instructor with over 15 years experience. One of the most common problems for divers I see is: using too much weight. We all know that if you are perfectly weighted, you should float at eye level on the surface with your BCD fully deflated. But there is more to it! Contrary to popular opinion, if you are correctly weighted, then it SHOULD be a little difficult to begin your descent. You shouldn't be dropping like a stone in the first few feet. In fact you should be a little stuck on the surface. So here is my tip to easily get unstuck. Introducing: The Bob. Start by giving a small kick with your fins straight down below you. This will cause you to rise up out of the water a little. As your weight brings you back down, purge your BCD using the dump valve, and make yourself streamlined. Once you pass the first few feet, you will become neutrally buoyant. Sometimes, when learning basic skills, it is a good thing to have extra weight with us. But for divers who would like to reduce their air consumption and better control their buoyancy during their dive...less is definitely more!
