In this 1954 Riga Championship encounter, Mikhail Tal faced Janis Mileika in a classic King’s Indian Defense structure. The early middlegame saw balanced tension: both sides expanded on opposite flanks — White pushed on the queenside while Tal prepared counterplay on the kingside with …f5 and …g5. As the center opened, Tal’s dynamic play shone. His pawns advanced with precision, and his knights coordinated beautifully to seize control of the dark squares. Entering the endgame, the position looked roughly equal — but Tal’s deeper understanding turned it into a masterclass in coordination. The critical move 61...Rd2! restricted White’s king and transformed the position. Tal then advanced his passed pawns, forced exchanges, and finally delivered checkmate with 67...Rd1# — a clean and instructive conclusion. This game teaches beginners how activity and precision in endgames outweigh material balance, how to coordinate rooks effectively, and why cutting off the enemy king is often the key to victory. 🔔 Subscribe for more classic Tal brilliance!
