HAPPY NEW YEAR 2026! In the Reading Room, I read books. Sometimes, reading is straight-forward, particularly when it is a fiction book. Nevertheless, you should expect some commentary, even though it is very little for some books. Still, I find it refreshing to hear a story, so The Reading Room has been a staple in my CLASSROOM since the beginning of THE CLASSROOM in 2023. I've been doing my Healthy Mind Body Spirit podcast on YouTube since 2020. From the back cover of Black Looks: In these twelve new essays, feminist theorist ad cultural critic Bell Hooks digs ever deeper into the personal and political consequences of contemporary representations of black women and men within our white supremacist culture. Taking on poplar music, advertising, literature, television, historical narrative and, most importantly, film, Hooks consistently demonstrates the incisive intelligence and passion for justice that prompted Publishers Weekly to dub her "one of the foremost black intellectuals in America today." The critical essays in this collection are gestures of defiance. They represent my political struggle to push against the boundaries od the image to find words that express what I see, especially when I am looking in ways that move against the grain, when I am seeing things that most folks want to simply believe are not there... Fierce critical interrogation is sometimes the only practice that can pierce the wall of denial consumers of images construct so as not to force the fact that politics of domination inform the way the vast majority of images we consume are constructed and marketed. Bell Hooks (the cover consistently does not capitalize Bell Hooks. I have opted to make this change) is a writer and professor who speaks widely on issues of race, class and gender. Her previous books include Ain't I a woman, Feminist Theory, Talking Back, Yearning and most recently, with Cornel West, Breaking Bread: Insurgent Black Intellectual Life. Representatives at Oakland University have recently challenged my teaching by accusing me of being mentally unfit without evidence and overwhelming evidence to the contrary. I believe this to be unconscionable. They have taken this course in order to suppress voices that speak out against their unethical data collection by making university data readily available to companies like Amazon and then allowing mischaracterizations of the mental health of a thirteen-year, award winning, veteran teacher for speaking out. I also speak out against university research and development of dangerous drugs they label as medication and continue to use taxpayer dollars to develop pharmaceutical drugs that have a proven reputation of creating extreme health risks including death. Please support my efforts to speak out against those corporate, university, medical, and law enforcement criminals that continue to support injustice and a healthcare system that has demonstrated it is broken by continuously getting humans more and more mentally and physically ill and addicted. Dr. Annette Feravich has a Ph.D. in Social, Developmental and Cognitive Psychology with an emphasis on Positive Psychology. Positive Psychology is the science that studies specific behaviors that result in good mental (Cognitive), physical (Developmental) and spiritual (Social) health. I received my Ph.D. in May, 2010 from Wayne State University, Detroit, MI. I've been teaching at all levels from kindergarten through college for over 20 years.
