Downtown Sacramento serves as the heart of the city—its central business district and a hub of government, commerce, and entertainment. Bordered by the American River to the north, the Sacramento River to the west, Broadway to the south, and 16th Street to the east, this area includes both the city’s political core and some of its most popular attractions. More specifically, the central business district is often defined as the zone between H Street and R Street, extending from the Sacramento River to 16th Street. The street layout in downtown follows a grid system using numbered and lettered streets. Numbered streets run east-west, while lettered streets run north-south. However, there are a few exceptions to this pattern—Capitol Mall and Capitol Avenue take the place of M Street, Front Street in Old Sacramento lines up with what would be 1st Street, Broadway corresponds to Y Street, and Alhambra Boulevard marks what would be 31st Street. This area is home to some of Sacramento’s most prominent landmarks. The California State Capitol, where the state government operates, is located here, as is the recently upgraded Sacramento City Hall. The Downtown serves as a major destination for shopping, dining, and entertainment. It includes the Golden 1 Center—home of the Sacramento Kings—alongside Macy’s, the Sawyer Hotel, and numerous restaurants and retail stores. Downtown also features the Sacramento Convention Center Complex, a key venue for significant events and gatherings. At 11th and K Streets, the beautifully restored Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament stands as a major historical and architectural landmark—the largest cathedral west of the Sacramento River.
