Shasta Birding Society Presents WHAT: Join us for a dialogue on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's proposed Barred Owl population management program. This discussion features opposing viewpoints from: • Tom Wheeler (Executive Director, Environmental Protection Information Center, Arcata, CA) • Stephen Hernick (Managing Attorney, Wildlife Law Program of Friends of Animals, Greenwood Village, CO) The goal of this event is to inform attendees and foster a healthy, respectful discussion. WHEN: Join us Wednesday January 14, 2026, at 7:00 P.M. PST BACKGROUND: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service embarked on a controversial control program to protect federally endangered Northern and California Spotted Owls from displacement by the Barred Owl, a species native to North America east of the Mississippi River. Barred Owls have been successfully competing with and displacing the federally protected Spotted Owl throughout the Pacific Northwest for many years. The FWS plans to kill up to 450,000 Barred Owls over the next 30 years to help prevent the feared extinction of the Spotted Owl. This decision has been received with sharply split views from various conservation organizations and individuals.
