Kouri Richins wrote a children's book about grief after her husband's death. She promoted it on morning television, presenting herself as a widow processing an "unexpected" tragedy. Prosecutors say she'd been planning Eric's death for weeks and had a boyfriend waiting. How does someone perform grief they may not feel — and can that performance become so convincing that even they start to believe it? Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott examines the psychology of compartmentalization at its most extreme. The 911 call the night Eric died was played in court — Kouri was sobbing hysterically, barely able to answer questions. The defense called it "the sounds of a wife becoming a widow." Yet prosecutors say her phone was active in the hours before that call, and Eric's sister testified Kouri appeared "well put together" with her hair done when she arrived. How do we understand someone who can allegedly orchestrate a death, then produce what sounds like genuine devastation? Is it performance, or can someone actually feel grief for an outcome they caused? Internet searches recovered from Kouri's phone included "luxury prisons for the rich," "can cops force you to do a lie detector test," and "if someone is poisoned what does it go down on the death certificate as." These searches suggest awareness that what she was doing was wrong and had consequences. How do you reconcile that awareness with apparent belief that she was justified or would get away with it? Can someone know something is criminal and still believe they're entitled to do it? After nearly three years in jail awaiting trial, Kouri has maintained her innocence. Her mother says she believes "a hundred percent" she'll be found not guilty. Shavaun Scott breaks down cognitive distortion, performance, and how an alternate reality gets constructed and sustained.
