Every year around this time, people start asking me the same question: “How do you decorate a castle for Halloween?” 🎃 Well, this year, I decided to show you exactly how — from pumpkins and cobwebs to ghosts in the turret and twinkling lights around the old stone walls. Welcome to my Halloween Special at the little castle in Wales! 🏰✨ If you’ve followed me for a while, you’ll know that Halloween is one of my absolute favourite times of the year. There’s just something magical about the mix of autumn leaves, candlelight, misty mornings, and that wonderful sense of cosy spookiness that seems to suit this old place perfectly. I start decorating at the very beginning of October — partly to make the most of the season, and partly to signal to friends and visitors that Halloween is coming! Over the years, I’ve built up quite the collection of Halloween decorations. In fact, I have boxes and boxes of them stored away in the outbuildings — ghosts, skeletons, lanterns, bats, and pumpkins of every kind. Some are vintage pieces I’ve collected from markets; others are handmade, and a few have been with me for decades. When you live in a little castle, the setting itself does half the work — but I do love going the extra mile to create something truly atmospheric. This year, I had great fun decorating — although it wasn’t without its challenges! My commitment to Halloween is real. I climbed up a ladder (which is no small thing for me, as I’m absolutely terrified of heights!) to hang lights and drape cobwebs across the higher windows. I even did it in the rain, soaked through but determined that every corner of the castle should look properly spooky. To make matters more dramatic, I was doing all this while nursing a cold — sniffles, tea breaks, and all. But that’s the thing about living in the countryside: you just get on with it, and somehow it always feels worth it in the end. No Halloween scene would be complete without pumpkins, of course. Some of mine are from the local farm shop, but many are homegrown — from my very own vegetable garden here at the castle. I’ve been nurturing them since spring, watching them swell and ripen under the summer sun. There’s something so satisfying about seeing your own pumpkins glowing on the doorstep, surrounded by flickering candles and ivy from the garden.
