Mono Sea Angel Fish is an amazing fish to own. The triangular shape, silver coloring & yellow fins shoaling is a treat to watch. Lack of awareness is the reason most fail in keeping these fish. Silver moony are born in brackish water & swim back to Ocean as adults. This makes it interesting in setting up a Brackish water Tank & converting it into a Marine Tank with time as an Hobbyist. I hope the information below would help anyone getting these fish home. Natural Habitat Distribution of Silver Moonies - Coastal Area's of South East Asia ,Red Sea, Australia, Eastern Africa Common names - Silver moony, Silver moon fish, Malayan Angel, Mono Argenteus, Silver Moonfish, Finger fish etc There is no information available on Captive breeding nor differentiating between Male & Female for Monodactylus argenteus. However some Brackish water Research institute in India seems to be working on breeding Mono's & Scats for ornamental fish keeping. Hopefully we would have more information about this species soon. Lifespan - Mono's live for 7 to 10 years with proper care in an aquarium Size - They can reach between 8 to 12 inches Aquarium Care for Mono Angelfish - Tank Size - 50 Gallon or more for Juveniles & 120 Gallon for more for Adult Malayan Angel fish. Buy at least 5 to 7 Juveniles as these are shoaling fish. Filtration - HOB filter with bio-wheel recommended Water parameters - Temperature range - 75° to 82°F (23.8° to 27.7°C) pH range - 7.5 to 8.5 Water Hardness - 10 to 15 dGH (Juveniles) Specific Gravity of water should be 1.008 & increased by 0.002 as they grow. Marine salt needs to be added to water separately in a container, about 3 to 4 tablespoons per gallon works with most brands of marine salt. Tank Decor - Use Sand & Rocks for tank bottom. Live plants can be included but remember that as soon as the specific gravity reaches 1.015 freshwater plants die. Food - Readily available fish food like Pellets, Flakes, Freeze Dried worms, Live Food & Spinach, Lettuce, Boiled Pea's, Zucchini etc can be fed. Tank Mates for Sea Angel - I have kept Sea angels with Mollies, Scats & Orange Chromide without any problem.
