Raahein Gharana presents Rhythmic Roots: Odisha KANJI is a soulful indie folk song rooted in the vibrant cultural landscape of Kalahandi, Odisha. This unique musical creation celebrates the rich rhythms, languages, and traditions of the region through an ensemble of 12 artists – 9 regional and 3 contemporary — blending the raw energy of grassroots music with fresh, modern perspectives. Rhythmic Roots: Our series of 28 songs (one song per state) is a heartfelt tribute to India’s folk heritage. Our latest joyful endeavor, “KANJI” is a playful Odia folk song tells the story of Kanji—a simple fermented rice soup—as if it were a traveler during the holy month of Kartika. Going from house to house, Kanji meets the potter, the cook, the cowherd, the barbar, the Brahmin. Beneath the humor lies a clever commentary on how different classes treat the same humble thing. The song uses allegory to reflect on food, respect, and social divides. Though light and rhythmic, it holds a deeper mirror to culture, tradition, and inequality—making this folk tune both entertaining and subtly profound. RAAHEIN Gharana creates independent regional music across India, focusing on forgotten or underappreciated live instruments, ensuring global audiences recognize the diversity beyond sitar and tabla. Our Vision Accessibility: Building a "human library" of Indian sounds and instruments, reviving those that have been dusted or forgotten.
