BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Martin Yates. Raphael Wallfisch as the cello soloist. I - Molto moderato - Più allegro - Deciso - Poco tranquillo - Molto tranquillo - Allegro deciso - Molto moderato (tempo primo): 0:00 Bowen's Rhapsody for Cello & Orchestra was composed in 1924, being written for British cellist Beatrice Harrison. The work is written in a large, single movement subdivided in three main sections. Unfortunately there is not much info available about the piece. The piece opens with a dramatic introduction, before the cellist presents an expressive main theme of romantic nature. It is briefly developed before a more bucolic and pastoral second theme appears, rising in an opulent climax. The colourful, richly chromatic style reminds us of Arnold Bax as the development of these material continues. The music then slows down, leading us to the second section. A widely lyrical new theme is presented by the soloist, unfolding in a delicate dream-like manner. Then the music begins to gain momentum, leading to the third section. A forceful theme is introduced by the cello, full of energy and bravura. However, the energy quickly dissipates, leaving us with an extensive and peaceful postlude that ends the work in the same romantic vein it began.
