Deep in the Carpathian Mountains of Ukraine, Svitlana and Dmytro are raising five children in a village with no paved roads, almost no electricity, and no internet. The village of Samakova was founded in 1580 by people escaping oppression — and for 200 years, no government even knew it existed. In this video, Svitlana prepares a massive family dinner — roasted pork with herbs, clay-pot potatoes, beets, and handmade potato patties fried over an open fire. All cooked on a wood-burning stove in a separate kitchen building, a centuries-old Carpathian tradition. Their children — Khrystyna, Zhenya, Ivan, Oleksiy, and Matviy — walk up to 7 km to school through snow and mud. There is almost no cell signal on the mountain. Last year, thanks to this channel, running water was installed in their home for the first time.
