An animation of Su Song's Cosmic Engine, an astronomical clock tower built during the Song dynasty from 1088 - 1092 AD. Su Song's Cosmic Engine was an astronomical clock tower that was built in the city of Kaifeng in 1092 by the astronomer Su Song. The clock tower was more than 10 meters high and was equipped with a huge bronze water-driven astronomical instrument called an armillary sphere, with which one could observe the positions of the stars. Each day and night, the machinery made one complete revolution, and the seven luminaries moved their positions around the ecliptic. Twelve other wooden jacks were also made to come out at each of the double-hours, one after the other, bearing tablets indicating the time. Su Song left detailed blueprints and directions of exactly how it was built. The Cosmic Engine worked until the Jurchens captured Kaifeng in 1127. The Jurchens dismantled it and carted its components back to their own capital in modern-day Beijing. However, due to the complexity of the tower, they were unable to piece it back together.
