The #SouthSandwichIslands expedition set out to identify new species and examine geohazards in one of the most remote locations on Earth. Situated between the Southern and Atlantic Oceans, these islands are part of a rich mosaic of tectonic forces that create geologic features such as hadal zone trenches, underwater volcanoes, and spreading centers. These features facilitate high levels of endemism, supporting species found nowhere else. Dr. Michelle Taylor, president of the Deep-Sea Biology Society and Senior Lecturer at the University of Essex, and Dr. Jenny Gales, who leads GoSouth, a collaboration between the University of Plymouth, GEOMAR, and the British Antarctic Survey, led this Ocean Census flagship expedition in partnership with Schmidt Ocean Institute. During the second-to-last ROV dive, they encountered a breathtaking sight: a 5-meter-tall hydrothermal vent. 129ºC/246ºF water flowed from the vent, and yet there was an abundance of life living on, in, and around this extreme environment. Watch the scientists as they realize this discovery and share it with a global audience in our latest expedition video.
