India's Stray Dog Crisis: SC Order, Public Backlash & Shelter Reality Exposed | India Today's Report

The Supreme Court's recent order mandating the pickup and sheltering of stray dogs in Delhi NCR within eight weeks has ignited widespread reactions. While some view the verdict as a relief, others condemn it as illogical. The Chief Justice of India has agreed to urgently consider a request concerning community dogs following the August 11 order. Despite the written order not yet being uploaded, action is being taken on the ground, with stray dogs being picked up by authorities. High Courts in Rajasthan and Madras have also issued similar directives. India Today's ground report reveals significant operational lapses in animal welfare centres run by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Centres in Tughlaqabad, Lajpat Nagar, and Vasant Kunj showed issues like closure, staff absence, lack of records, and unhygienic conditions. Delhi reportedly has no dedicated dog shelters, only 20 sterilization centres with a combined capacity for about 2,500 dogs. Experts state that controlling the stray population requires sterilizing at least 70% of dogs, a target unlikely to be met with existing systems.
