On June 1, 2021, WHO said that only one strain of the COVID-19 B.1.617 variant is now considered as a variant of concern(VOC). The Delta variant or B.1.617.2 is one of the strains of the B.1.617 COVID-19 variant. The B.1.617 variant, first found in India has 3 strains - B.1.617.1, B.1.617.2, and B.1.617.3. The B.1.617 variant is behind the deadly second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in India. WHO declared all the 3 strains of B.1.617 as VOC in the second week of May. But now only the Delta is considered as VOC due to its increased transmissibility. The Delta variant has now been reported in 62 countries. The B.1.617.1 or the Kappa variant is demoted as a Variant of Interest. The B.1.617.3 is now not even considered of interest due to few reports of this variant. Meanwhile, India records 1.32 lakh new Covid cases, 3,207 deaths in the last 24 hours.
