#allweimagineaslight #payalkapadia #lff2024 PAYAL KAPADIA’S second film, ‘All We Imagine as Light’ comes to London Film Festival (October 9-20) next week and it is the first time British audiences will get a chance to see this Cannes 2024 Grand Prix winning film from India - and in part about Mumbai and the Maharashtra coastal town of Ratnagiri. ‘All We Imagine as Light’ played in Cannes in May to great acclaim and had already achieved something in being selected for Competition – an Indian film had not appeared in Official Competition at Cannes since ‘Swaham’ by Shaji N Karun in 1994 and ‘All We Imagine as Light’ broke the barrier and arguably her Cannes Competition entry was aided and abetted by her 2021 Golden Eye award there for the best documentary and her first film, ‘A Night of Knowing Nothing’ ( • Cannes 2021: Golden Eye award top doc... ) which is a hybrid, mixing fact and fiction imaginatively and ostensibly about riots and anti-government protests that swept India and began at her college in Pune, The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in 2015. In May 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally commended Kapadia for her accolade (See post on X) – the first time an Indian filmmaker had been recognised with a leading Competition prize in Cannes since ‘Neecha Nagar’ by Chetan Anand (http://asianculturevulture.com/portfo...) in 1946 – the first ever Cannes.
