Agra is famous for its rich history, culture and impressive architecture. Taj Mahal The first attraction that comes to mind when thinking of Agra is the iconic Taj Mahal. This wonderful mausoleum is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and attracts millions of tourists every year. It was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, who passed away while giving birth to their 14th child. The emperor was so saddened by the loss that he decided to build a mausoleum for his beloved wife. Construction of the Taj Mahal took about 22 years, having been completed in 1653, and employed over 20,000 workers. The monument has a central dome and four minarets at the corners, and is surrounded by manicured gardens. The white marble used in construction is so fine that sunlight can penetrate it and give the monument a heavenly appearance. It is truly a masterpiece of architecture and art being a UNESCO World Heritage Site and attracting millions of visitors every year. Mirza Ghiyath Beg Tomb (Itmad–Ud-Daulah) – Etamadaula Another famous tomb of Agra city is Mirza Ghiyath Beg Tomb. Mirza Ghiyath Beg was a Persian nobleman who moved to India during the reign of Emperor Akbar in the 16th century, served as commander-in-chief of the Emperor's army, and helped to consolidate the Mughal Empire in India. The Mirza Ghiyath Beg Tomb was built in his honor after his death in 1622, is famous for its unique architecture, which combines Persian and Mughal elements, is called “the little Taj” and is close to the famous Taj Mahal. Agra fort Another must-see attraction in Agra is the Agra Fort, a red sandstone fortress that was built in the 16th century by Emperor Akbar. Agra Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers amazing views of the Taj Mahal and the Yamuna River. During the Mughal period, the Fort served as an important royal residence, as well as being a center of political and cultural power. The complex comprises several notable buildings and monuments, including the Tower of Jahangir, the Moti Masjid Mosque, the Hall of Public Audiences, the Mirror Pavilion, the Palace of Jahangir and the Palace of Khas Mahal, among others. The Fort can be visited throughout the year, but the best time to visit is between October and March, when temperatures are milder. Fatehpur Sikri Fatehpur Sikri is an abandoned city that is approximately 500 years old but remains in excellent condition. It was built in the 16th century in Indo-Islamic style and just fourteen years after its construction it was abandoned due to lack of water. It is one of the most impressive examples of Mughal architecture in India and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was built because in 1568 Emperor Akbar had no heirs to replace him and went looking for mystical help, with Shaikh Salim Chisti, who lived in the village of Sikri. The saint's prophecy was confirmed and the first of the emperor's three successors was born. So Akbar, who was a great builder, planned a city to serve as a support for the capital of the empire, Agra, and arranged for it to be close to Sikri. The city was mathematically built with a rectangular plan, in which the streets intersect at right angles, and contemplating the various types of administrative, residential and religious buildings, in red sandstone.
