Here as you can see in the satellite image, this thick mass of clouds shows Cyclone Phailin has worsened into a severe cyclone, which would worsen further into a very severe cyclonic storm by today evening. The first of the kind since the cyclone in 1999 that hit Odisha, Cyclone Phailin, has already developed into a Category-4 cyclone with wind speeds of about 220 kmph, which is bound to turn into a Category-5 cyclone forming a very severe cyclone with wind speeds over 250 kmph. Cyclone Phailin is moving northwestwards, but now it looks like the head of the storm will only hit Odisha coast sparing north Andhra coast, but there will be very heavy rainfall here. Phailin will therefore hit close to north of Gopalpur at a speed of about 220 kmph tomorrow evening. Currently, Cyclone Phailin is at a distance of just 530kms from Gopalpur. Alarms of high alert have been raised in Odisha as 200mm of heavy rain, storming winds and sea tides as high as 3meters could lead to massive destruction. Brahmapur, Ganjam, Chatrapur, Puri, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Balasore and Bhadrak in south Odisha could be devastated by the cyclone tomorrow. The cyclone will then begin dissipating and move towards north Odisha, Jharkhand, west Bihar and Chhattisgarh on the 13th giving plentiful rain. Rourkela, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Baripada in north Odisha, Ranchi, Gumla, Dhanbad, Hazaribagh in Jharkhand and Dumka, Gaya, Patna in Bihar, will receive heavy rain. Our weather models show, Cyclone Phailin could wreak havoc for 48 hours and die-down on the 14th of Ocotber.
