Start of the Rover 216 GTi project vlog. Part 1 'draining the fuel tank'. My 1992 Rover 216 GTi (R8) twincam has been off the road since April this year after I found structural rust in both sills where they meet the wheel arches. So today, I decided to start the restoration or at least get the bodyshell back in good shape so I can at least put it through the MOT test to be able to drive it. Mechanically the car is utterly reliable and almost unbreakable but unfortunately twenty two British winters and some lousy built in mud and water traps have helped some of the body to dissolve. Since body and trim parts for this type and age of Rover are very hard to find (most specialists list body panels as 'no longer available'), it looks like some hand made patch panels will be needed. I want the repairs to last so all rust will be cut out and new metal welded back in. Since cutting, grinding and welding generates a lot of heat and sparks, the fuel tank was drained using a Sealey oil suction tool and in part two it will be removed as even an empty tank will still contain flammable vapours.
