So many stars - S. Mendes, A. & M. Bergman (1968). A meditation on the night sky, or maybe on the beginning of life, or the end of life, or on the search for a special person somewhere in the world. Alan Bergman (d .2025) and Marilyn Bergman (d. 2022) had something of a specialty in lyrics that took in a bigger, more existential picture than usual: The windmills of your mind, Summer me, winter me, What are you doing the rest of your life, The way we were. Sérgio Mendes (d. 2024) was a fantastic, multi-faceted musician, both as a performer and a composer, who headed up the group Brasil 66 (and later editions) until the very end. Recording: You can start (and finish!) with the version by Lani Hall, who sang with Mendes for several years. Other versions include some heavy hitters: Barbra Streisand, Natalie Cole, Kathleen Battle, Sarah Vaughan, Jane Monheit, Stacey Kent, Roseanna Vitro, Emilie-Claire Barlow, Erika Dobosiewicz Voces Antiguas, Pure Harmony (Austria), Klaus Osterloh, Jaqui Dankworth. But Lani Hall really owned this tune, even though the Bergmans worked with Streisand regularly. Ukulele key: F. I’m playing it here on a baritone tuned down a step, so the key you’re hearing is Bb, but the print edition is in F. The form is AABA, with the A sections divided into an unusual 6+8. If there was a conscious attempt on Mendes’s part to capture the profundity of the mood, it comes out in the melody, in the way the repeated leaps downwards to the dominant C seem to suggest an infinite, cosmic expanse. The bridge suggests A minor and G, but it doesn’t stray too far from the home key. What you hear are some very magical voicings, in a sort of descending sequence - and again preserving that motive of the downward leaps to scale-step 5 - to create a beautiful and haunting affect. pdf https://drive.google.com/file/d/1GfVHiwBp3...
