UG NX–based APIs for the simplification of 3D CAD assembly models (version 1)

3D CAD model has different levels of detail (LODs) according to a purpose. Detail design of a product typically produces 3D CAD assembly models. Therefore, it is necessary to automatically simplify a 3D CAD assembly model to meet a desired LOD by a user. Basic functions required for the simplification are extracting necessary data from a model, evaluating importance of elements of a model, and deleting less important elements of a model. For this, we presented a method to develop application programing interfaces (APIs) required for the simplification of 3D CAD assembly models based on UG NX, a 3D CAD system. We analyzed functional requirements for the simplification and then designed simplification APIs to meet functional requirements. Based on the design, we developed simplification APIs and implement a test program to verify the developed simplification APIs.
