A pivotal moment came during her high school years when she attended TEDx Fargo. The event transformed her perception of her hometown and planted the seeds for her eventual return. Emma reflects on how her involvement with the Fargo Youth Initiative Board and her internship at Emerging Prairie exposed her to the dynamic energy of Fargo’s community-building efforts. Emma explains how TEDx Fargo redefined her sense of what Fargo could offer, inspiring her to leave for college in Colorado with the intention of returning to create meaningful change. While studying at the University of Northern Colorado, she interned remotely with Emerging Prairie, taking on responsibilities beyond her years and discovering a passion for intentional community events and entrepreneurship programs. Through her work at Emerging Prairie, Emma honed her skills in event planning, learning the importance of creating experiences that prioritize attendee needs, from dietary restrictions to signage that aligns with human patterns. This foundation set her up for her current role at Folkways, where she has taken on the challenge of being the organization’s first Development Manager. Folkways, a nonprofit dedicated to enhancing Fargo’s cultural vibrancy, runs beloved programs like the Red River Farmers Market, the Night Bazaar, and the European-inspired Christkindlmarkt. Emma shares her admiration for Folkways' co-founders, Joe and Simone, who returned to Fargo with a vision of bringing big-city experiences to their hometown. She explains how their infectious energy and drive to create vibrant cultural hubs influenced her decision to join Folkways, where she now oversees development efforts for a range of programs aimed at making Fargo not just a place to work but a place to thrive. Emma and Conrad also delve into Fargo’s unique cultural identity, exploring how the city’s weather and tight-knit community create a welcoming environment for newcomers. Emma contrasts Fargo's cohesive sense of place with her experiences in Colorado, where rapid growth led to a loss of community connection. The discussion highlights Fargo's resilience, entrepreneurial spirit, and the importance of fostering a vibrant downtown to attract and retain talent. From Emma’s early days volunteering at a Folkways pop-up park to leading development initiatives for their signature programs, this episode captures the essence of her journey and the transformative power of community engagement. Whether it’s the smell of fried food in downtown Fargo or the innovative spirit of local leaders, this conversation offers a compelling look at what makes Fargo special.
