I had to stop and take this video footage of this rare event! Samson and Goliath, Harland and Wolff's massive cranes sitting side by side. Once rated the most powerful and largest cranes in the world they now sit virtually redundant. Successive UK governments of all 'colour's', sold out on the UK's traditional shipbuilding industry,- an industry that once led the world. They allowed foreign yards to undercut UK yards on price. Our caring governments would not subsidize UK yards while EU yards were almost all subsidized. Chineses and South east Asian yards now build all the world's tankers and cargo vessels, while EU yards in Germany, France and even in Greece and Italy build the world's cruise ships. Almost nothing is built in UK yards. The UK ship building industry was allowed to die along with the skills, knowledge and jobs that went with it! Shame on our governments and our political leaders! Clearly they cared nothing for the shipbuilding communities dotted round these islands that they helped destroy. The cranes which were named after the Biblical figures Samson and Goliath, dominate the Belfast skyline and are landmark. structures of the city. I believe that they are now listed. The cranes are situated in the shipyard of Harland & Wolff and were constructed by the German engineering firm Krupp, with Goliath being completed in 1969 and Samson, in 1974. Goliath stands 96 metres (315 ft) tall, while Samson is taller at 106 metres (348 ft). Goliath, the smaller of the two sits slightly further inland closer to Belfast City. At the time Harland & Wolff was one of the largest shipbuilders in the world.
