In this tutorial, taken from our complete guide to dialing in your guitar tone, we’re using a MESA/Boogie® Fillmore™ 50 combo amp and a P-90-equipped guitar to dial in the cleanest possible tone WITHOUT using pedals, just the amp and a guitar with P-90 pickups. Starting with every knob at noon and listening closely to how the amp reacts, this step-by-step guide shows how to shape your EQ, gain, and reverb settings to get that dynamic, sparkling tone that makes P-90s shine so you can make the most of that luxurious P-90 clean sound! If you’re struggling with harsh top-end or muddy lows, these small tweaks will help you find the sweet spot on your amp, which is easily transferable whether you’re gigging, jamming, or recording. Here's how to get the best clean tone from your P-90 guitar (no pedals needed) using only your amp and guitar: Step 1: Set everything at noon Start with your amp on the clean channel. Set gain, bass, mids, treble, and presence all to 12 o’clock. This gives you a balanced, neutral starting point to hear how the pickups naturally sound. Step 2: Tame the top end P-90s can be bright. If the highs feel sharp or harsh, turn the treble and presence controls down slightly. Reducing treble and presence smooths out any harshness and brings warmth back into your tone. Step 3: Clean up the lows and dial in the mids P-90s have strong midrange, but you still need clarity. Lower the bass slightly and adjust the mids until the sound feels full but not boomy. Balancing the mids and lows helps you keep girth in the tone without letting it get muddy. Step 4: Fine-tune presence for clarity without harshness Once the EQ feels right, revisit the presence control to refine the top-end sparkle. Dial it back slightly if the highs are too sharp—your goal is chime, not shrillness. Step 5: Add reverb after your tone is dialed Once your dry tone is sounding great, bring in reverb for depth and space. A subtle touch of reverb opens up the sound without overpowering your clean tone. Step 6: Adjust gain and master volume for headroom If you want a louder clean sound, turn the gain down slightly and increase the master volume. This gives you more clean headroom—if you bring the gain back up, you’ll get a bit more bite at the top. With a few thoughtful EQ moves and careful control of your gain structure, you can get a huge, clear, clean tone from your P-90 guitar—just using your amp. No pedals required. 📼 Related Videos To Watch Next: ▶ A complete guide to unlocking and dialing in your guitar amp: • Better guitar tones WITHOUT pedals — Dial ... ▶ How to buy a tube amp in 2025: • You'll wish you knew this before buying yo... ▶ The return of the Gibson Falcon amps! • The Return of Gibson Amps: Falcon 5 & Falc...
