Lake Chabot was constructed between 1874 and 1875 by the Contra Costa Water Company under the leadership of Anthony Chabot, a pioneer in hydraulic mining and large-scale water projects. Originally called the San Leandro Reservoir, it was later renamed Lake Chabot to honor its creator. The project was a massive undertaking for its time, requiring the movement of hundreds of thousands of cubic yards of earth to build the dam that still stands today. Much of this work was carried out by a large workforce of Chinese laborers, whose immense contributions were vital to the project’s success. Today, their efforts are recognized through public memorials, paying tribute to the lives and labor that made the lake possible. Although the reservoir’s primary purpose was to supply water to the growing East Bay region, its role eventually expanded. In the 1960s, legislation opened Lake Chabot for recreational use, transforming it into a beloved outdoor destination. What was once purely utilitarian now offers opportunities for fishing, boating, hiking, biking, and simple relaxation. Spread across 317 acres, the park features shaded groves, open meadows, and numerous picnic areas where visitors can unwind and take in the lake’s tranquil beauty. On our visit, we didn’t quite follow the preplanned 12-mile loop trail around the lake. Instead, we wandered off the main route, exploring at our own pace. Even without completing the full circuit, the experience was memorable—an adventure marked not just by the sights along the way but also by the sense of freedom in letting the day unfold naturally. Sometimes the best journeys aren’t about covering every mile, but about savoring the moments that linger long after the ride is over.
