Livestock Traders at the Tamale Cattle market are calling on the Metropolitan Assembly to provide a fence wall and sanitary facilities at the market to improve the sanitary condition of the place for a smooth business in the market. The livestock sector contributes about 30 percent of revenue to the economy. Ghana imports livestock from neighbouring countries but experts believe the country has the potential to reduce its import dependence provided livestock farmers in the northern regions are supported with the needed logistics to enhance production. Many Northerners are engaged in livestock rearing but lack of access to a ready market has been identified as a factor hindering the business in the north. It is against this backdrop that the cattle market was revived by the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly at Datoyili a year ago. However, traders there have raised concerns about the lack of some basic social amenities at the market such as washrooms, electricity and a fenced wall. SOT 1: Alhaji Iddurisu Alhassan, Deputy Chairman, Tamale Cattle Market: "Since the market was established, we’ve seen a significant improvement in the sale of our animals. However, in such a big market, we don't have a toilet facility and we do not have electricity and water. The lack of power makes it difficult for us to extend our business into the night. Our animals also get stolen at night. We also lack a public place of convenience for our clients." VO Reacting to the concerns raised by the cattle traders, the Tamale mayor, Alhaji Hanan Gundadow, said the livestock market will benefit under the Government Rural Electrification project. SOT 2: Alhaji Abdul-Rahaman Hanan Gundadow, Tamale Mayor VO He said the assembly would put up a concrete fence to protect the traders’ livestock. The Mayor appealed to the traders to give the assembly some time for the market to be restructured. From Tamale, Noah Nash for Viasat 1
