Minch Moor is an ancient road dating back more than 800 years, and likely far beyond that when Scotland was tribal. King Edward Plantagenet I and his armies travelled this road, as did Robert the Bruce, James Douglas, William Wallace, and general monks, pilgrims, and wayfarers of the day. General Montrose also hammered his way along this road to Traquair after defeat at the battle of Philiphaugh in 1645. It is a road steeped in the mythical fairyland, has a Devil’s pool, an ancient cheese well where travellers make donations to the fairies even today. The views are spectacular and it is now a part of the Southern Upland Way. On this walk I left from the town of Innerleithen and hiked up through the forests onto the high ground of Minch Moor to the viewpoint then walked the road for around 7 miles. Whatever direction you choose it is worth it. You will not meet too many people if any once you get onto the higher ground, and the solitary experience stirs the thoughts that you are walking an ancient way as you drink in the landscape of the Scottish Borders. #scottishhistory #geniusofbannockburn #explorescotland #history #scotland #medievalhistory #historywalks #scottish #scottishborders #southernuplandway #walkscotland #medievalscotland #ancientroads #travelscotland #minchmoor
