The lithium-ion batteries that power many personal electronics and electric vehicles contain flammable liquid electrolytes and rare elements. Researchers from Western University have developed a safer, cheaper, longer-lasting alternative that uses sodium in a solid form as the electrolyte. While sodium ions typically move poorly between the positive and negative ends of a battery, the researchers found that adding sulphur to the mix increased the conductivity of their design. They also showed their battery continued to perform well after countless charge-discharge cycles and across a wide range of temperatures.
