THE 56th TAUNTON CARNIVAL 2023

The Taunton Carnival takes part in the South Somerset Federation Carnivals, which is a collective of similar events. These carnival clubs and groups travel considerable distances to participate in these parades, which are a visual feast of colors, lights, and music that enliven the towns. Importantly, beyond the entertainment, these parades serve as significant fundraisers, contributing thousands of pounds annually to support local charities and various good causes. Currently, there are over 50 carnival clubs involved, each featuring elaborately designed floats called "carts" that stretch up to 100 feet in length. Some of these carts boast two levels with moving components, turntables, and impressive sound systems, adorned with as many as 30,000 light bulbs. Many of these carts are adopting energy-saving bulbs and LED technology to reduce their energy consumption. The creation of these large carts demands a combination of heavy engineering, electronics, carpentry, stage design, and costume design, all synchronized with the choreography of dance routines to bring these captivating parades to life.
