This is the Hardest Thing I have Ever Done

Well, I’m officially an expat!. I moved to France to renovate Château de la Chevronnais, a 19th century French château in the Mayenne. Still feels a little unreal to type that. After selling my house in the U.S. and saying some of the hardest goodbyes of my life to my daughter, my friends, and my sweet dog, I come back to France for good and jump straight into reality. The château is freezing. The heating works when it feels like it. I’m exhausted, I get sick almost immediately, and there is absolutely no gentle landing into this new chapter. So of course, the hard work begins. In this episode of GoGo Château, Vince and I pull out more rotted fencing, wrestle with decades old sheep wire using an angle grinder, and take on brambles that have clearly been winning for years. There is a chainsaw, a hedge trimmer that is way heavier than it looks, and concrete post bases that feel like they were poured sometime in another century. I learn new tools, make slow progress, and question my life choices more than once. Inside, I keep stripping wallpaper in the dining room and petit salon to make room for all of my belongings arriving soon from Atlanta. The rooms are cold, echoey, and unfinished, but little by little this fixer upper French château is starting to feel like home. And because no one should do this entirely alone, I get a much needed visit from fellow YouTubers Polly and Johnny from Brocante Legends. Polly brings a chandelier for me to audition that looks suspiciously like the one I swing on in my GoGo Château branding animation. I am nowhere near ready to make design decisions, but I am very ready for laughter, conversation, and some company in a very big house. This episode has grief in it. It also has grit, learning curves, humor, and the quiet hope that comes from just showing up and doing the work one imperfect day at a time.
