Upper Portals - Mt Montserrat Summit, Mt Barney: Stunning!

Saturday 2nd February 2019. Jacob and I hiked this one alone. Was very hot and very dry. The 4x4 road up to Cleared Ridge was not as bad as what I'd been reading... very manageable with my old Prado.... just had to take it a bit slow at 2 or 3 rough points. The Upper Portals were quite low, however we were able to have an awesome swim at the lower end underneath an amazing 4m high waterfall. The hike from the carpark took only 45 mins to the Upper Portals, but the hike up to Mt Montserrat Summit was a full on 58 min steep uphill climb. We just powered on up as best we could.... to be rewarded with the absolutely majestic view of the Western side of Mt Barney. Stunning! The mud pit on the return route was a challenge getting through (no footage sorry) as we actually had to build an ad hoc stepping stone rock bridge... it took us about 10 mins to cross because we were trying to find large enough rocks that would completely sink into the mud! And the return to the car is all uphill baby.... which make for a tough change to usual mountain hiking which is normally downhill. Unfortunately, I was unable to take any of my own drone footage of the Upper Portals on the day due to lack of time. The Upper Portals drone footage is fully credited to Mika Kumpulainen.
