Our friend and renowned turtle expert, Mr. George Heinrich kindly corrected us that Gopher Tortoises (like most tortoises) DO NOT shed their scutes on their shell including both the carapace and plastron. Thus the scutes that we found were from a deceased individual. We incorrectly assumed they shed their scutes because aquatic turtles do. Our apologies! 2. When stating how deep the burrows extend, Eli meant how long they can be not how deep (down)! Burrows average 15 feet long and 6.5 feet deep, though they have been documented reaching up to 40 feet long and 10 feet deep (sometimes even longer!).
