(12 Dec 1994) Russian troops, backed by helicopter gunships and planes, battled Chechen forces Monday, as the two sides opened last-ditch talks to avert a full-scale assault on the breakaway republic's capital Grozny. Thousands of Russian troops and hundreds of tanks and armoured cars awaited orders to seize Grozny from nearby positions. Chechen soldiers ambushed with surface-to-surface missiles a column of some 150 Russian armoured vehicles advancing through the separatist republic. Warplanes and helicopters bombarded Chechen positions near an oil installation. Explosions could be heard from Grozny.
