Following the Second World War, a number of war crimes trials were held to bring those responsible for atrocities and crimes against humanity to justice. The most famous trials were the Nuremberg Trials in which the remaining members of Hitler's inner circle were brought in front of a judge. However the Second World War did not end with Germany's surrender as Japan carried on the conflict in The Pacific against the US Army. The Japanese Army were known for committing horrific war crimes during World War 2, and similarly to Nuremberg, a trial was held after the conflict that brought the main Japanese War Criminals to justice. Placed on trial were some of the highest ranking members of the Japanese Government and figures such as Hideki Tojo, the former Prime Minister. Evidence of horrific mass murder was heard at the trial, and many former prisoners of war testified about their treatment at the hands of the Japanese. The court room heard about crimes such as what occurred at Nanking, and there was much deliberation as to what should happen to those who were the main aggressors of the Japanese war effort. Following the trial, 7 men were sentenced to death for their roles in war crimes and crimes against humanity. Condemned to death were Hideki Tojo, Kenji Doihara, Seishiro Itagaki, Heitaro Kimura, Akira Muto, Koki Hirota and Iwane Matsui. Each of these men were held at Sugamo Prison for a number of months, before they were executed in upmost secrecy by the US Army. The Americans feared reprisals for the executions of these men who many in Japan regarded as war heroes. However the gallows at Sugamo Prison saw much action following the Second World War as hundreds more Japanese soldiers and officers were sentenced to death for their crimes.
