On a quiet bend of the Alabama River lie the evocative ruins of Old Cahawba, the first capital of the newly admitted state of Alabama. Founded in 1819, the same year Alabama entered the Union, Cahawba was envisioned as a thriving political hub at the crossroads of river commerce and frontier ambition. Strategically located near the confluence of the Alabama and Cahaba rivers, the town quickly rose from wilderness to prominence. Government buildings, brick residences, churches, hotels, and warehouses lined its streets as legislators gathered to shape the future of the young state. Between 1819 and 1826, Cahawba stood at the center of Alabama’s political life. Yet its prosperity was fragile. Seasonal flooding, unstable lowland terrain, and ongoing debates over a more centrally located capital weakened the town’s standing. In 1826, the state government relocated to Tuscaloosa, marking the end of Cahawba’s brief but significant tenure as capital. Though it later experienced periods of economic revival, particularly through river trade and cotton commerce, repeated floods and post–Civil War decline ultimately transformed it into a ghost town. Today, archaeological investigations are steadily uncovering the foundations of the old statehouse, residential blocks, cemeteries, and commercial districts. Excavations reveal artifacts of daily life—ceramics, tools, personal belongings—offering a vivid glimpse into early 19th-century frontier society and the ambitions of a newly formed American state. Old Cahawba is not merely a forgotten town. It is a preserved chapter of Alabama’s origins— a place where history rests beneath the soil, still telling the story of a capital built by the river, and surrendered to it. #UnderwaterDiscovery #OldCahawba #LostCityOfOldCahawba #USA #DeepSeaDiscovery #UnderwaterExploration #underwater #treasurehunt #oceanmysteries #ShipwreckDiscovery #Alabama
