The Rotary Clubs of Tema Meridian and Accra-Cantonments East,Accra-Spintex , and several other Rotary clubs in collaboration with REACH Foundation and a host of dedicated partners, have successfully brought clean water and solar power to the Mawuse Care Center in Natriku, Akuse in the Lower Manya Krobo District of the Eastern Region. The project, which was officially launched on Saturday, 26th July, 2025, is part of the “Light Up Lives” project aimed at providing hope, health, and sustainability to under-resourced communities. Inspiration behind the project Rotarian President Doreen Mildred Toloo Agboka of the Rotary Club of Tema Meridian, the driving force behind this impactful project, shared the inspiring journey that led to its realisation. Speaking to Asaase News, President Agboka said her involvement began during a Becky Bonny Ministry concert, where she witnessed an emotional video of a child from Mawuse Care Center expressing their desperate need for basic amenities (water, electricity, and even a bus for transportation to school). The child’s plea highlighted the daily struggles faced by the children, including walking 40 minutes to school and back and a difficult 30-35 minute walk to fetch water. “It actually touched me,” President Agboka recounted, explaining how the children’s plight compelled her to propose the project to her club members. Following the board’s approval, a needs assessment was conducted at the Mawuse Care Center. While the initial focus was on water and electricity, the assessment revealed a broader range of needs. However, the Rotary clubs prioritized addressing the most fundamental challenges: “access to clean water and reliable power.” Project details and implementation The project included the installation of solar power, solar lighting, a borehole, and a sophisticated infiltration and reverse osmosis water treatment system. This approach was crucial, as initial water testing revealed the presence of iron and salt, rendering the water undrinkable without proper filtration. To address this, a reverse osmosis system, two polytanks, and a pump were installed, ensuring the provision of safe, potable water. The project was not without its financial hurdles. The cost of the project was substantial, prompting Nocheski Solar Limited, the solar provider, to absorb some of the expenses. President Agboka also reached out to the CEO of Reach Foundation, Kofi Bawuah who, despite having exhausted their funding on other projects, generously contributed over US$8,000. This significant donation was instrumental in acquiring essential components for the water system, including the pump, reverse osmosis unit, and polytanks. The spirit of collaboration extended across various Rotary and Rotaract clubs throughout Ghana and beyond. The total cost of the project, as estimated by President Agboka, stands at approximately 220,000 cedis. However, the impact on the lives of the children at Mawuse Care Center is immeasurable. Gratitude from the Mawuse Care Center For her part, the founder of the Mawuse Care Center, Madam Bernice Fiatsi-Bos, expressed deep appreciation for the intervention. “It means a lot. Look at the water; see how the children are enjoying the water. They’ve given us life because I believe water is life. They gave us light to enable the children to do their homework. They’ve given us so many things, so I say God bless them. I’m very grateful,” she said.
