(17 Aug 2018) After seven years of violent civil war, Aleppo's skyline looked ragged and battered on Thursday. Destroyed buildings and debris from years of shelling and gunfire were seen at every turn. The Syrian government retook Aleppo in 2016. Aleppo resident Saleh Taftaneyzi however, told Associated Press reporters — who went to the Syrian city under the supervision of the Russian army — that life had improved there. Taftaneyzi returned to Aleppo just over a year ago after spending three years in Lebanon to escape the war. Seven years of violent civil war have left Syria with catastrophic damage and massive rebuilding is needed. Ground warfare, airstrikes and barrel bombs have left entire cities and infrastructure a landscape of rubble. In some places like Aleppo, the destruction is reminiscent of World War II devastation. With Russia's support, Assad's forces have regained control over key cities, like Aleppo, Homs and Daraa, the southern city where the uprising against the government began in March 2011. The authorities also have restored control over key highways, allowing safe travel all the way form the Jordanian border in the south to the central province of Hama.
