EPISODE 27: A Gloomy but Gripping Gamer's Game features a full tutorial & detailed review of KOGGE. This unknown game from 2003 was designed by Andreas Steding, designer of my all-time favorite board game Hansa Teutonica. While Kogge takes a backseat to Hansa Teutonica's elegance and perfection, I still think Kogge has some really unique mechanisms woven into a thinky, gritty, cube-pushing experience that certain gamers out there will love. This episode aims to make sense of a terrible rulebook which is rife with silly typos, hard-to-interpret diction, and a complete lack of visual examples. I had a tough time organizing the tutorial in a way that made the most sense, but hopefully this video helps you understand the game. Kogge is a gamer's game for sure. It's not for family game night. It's not for new gamers. But if you like old-school euros in the likes of Caylus, Tigris & Euphrates, etc. this might be one for you to check out...if you can track down a copy. It's nearly impossible to find these days! Hint: Watch on 2x speed to cut the learning time in half! RULES CLARIFICATIONS: 1. If you choose a hidden route marker, and it leads to a city where you have your Raid token, the token stays revealed, and you must choose the other route. You are never allowed to visit a city you've already raided. Similarly, after a raid, your opponents can never make you retreat somewhere that has your other Raid token. 2. There is no limit to how many boats can be on each city/port. 3. There is no hand limit to tiles or cubes (other than what's supplied in the game). However, when you save up more and more goods, you make yourself a target for Raids. So it's a bit risky to save up too many cubes!!
