Luis Buñuel, Él (1953) – This Strange Passion – for Lacan an exemplary depiction of Paranoia

As one of the references for our year long study of "Delusions", the London Workshop of the Freudian Field will be discussing Luis Buñuel's 1953 film "El", "He" or "Him", which Jacques Lacan famously showed to his students at Sainte Anne's hospital as a perfect example of paranoia. This film was distributed in English under the title: "This Strange Passion". As Buñuel himself put it in a letter to Janet and Luis Alcoriza, dated 9 May 1954: “The response to Él has been surprising. It has some genuine and passionate supporters: at the Cinémathèque, with the Journées du Cinéma crowd, Cahiers du cinéma, Positif, Jacques Prévert, Bazin, Simone Dubreuilh, Kyrou and even Sadoul, etc. They've managed to lift the film's Cocteauian curse. Three days ago, UNESCO organized a screening of the film for psychiatrists based in Paris. There were about 50 of them in the screening room: Dr Jacques Lacan, the best-known world specialist in paranoia and director of the Sainte Anne hospital, Paris; Dr Ey, director of the Hospital de Chartres, etc., etc. It would take too long to tell you everything they said and asked after the screening. To sum up: they thought it was a perfect depiction of the syndrome. They were amazed we'd been able to produce such a well-defined characterisation. It was the second time Dr Lacan had seen the film. It was such a pleasure for me, the whole event.
