In light of some free time, I decided to head out once again and do some railfanning, this time in Fremont for the typical morning weekday action. Due to work and the recent wildfires and subsequent smoke / air quality, it has been rather difficult to head out and railfan. However, with some incoming rain and clearing of the smoke on this particular Tuesday, it sure was pleasant to be able to head back out trackside once again. The Fremont Station (also referred to as Centerville) serves as an intermediate station stop for both the Amtrak Capitol Corridor and Altamont Corridor Express (ACE) trains. This station is particularly interesting mainly because it has retained the original and restored Southern Pacific Depot originally built back in 1910. Additionally, the depot still has an accessible and functioning waiting room and customer service area (solely ACE ticket agents), as well as a café occupying the other part of the depot. The station also happens to be situated next to a couple adjacent crossings, making for some plentiful horn action for all trains coming through. Furthermore, all approaching trains can be heard diverging from either the Niles Subdivision or Junction to the north or conversely from the Coast Subdivision to the south. Consequently though, there happens to be a lot of vehicular traffic at the Fremont Boulevard crossing, as well as commuters who were rather negligent of the warning signals and bells and additionally walking in front of the train within a couple feet ! Regardless, whether it is the plentiful horn action, the regularly scheduled passenger trains, or the station itself, Fremont is certainly a place worth checking out ! Train 1 : Amtrak 521 with F59PHI #2001 & CabCar #8309. With the break of dawn, 521 arrives into Fremont and promptly departs with some loud horn action to start off the morning ! Train 2 : Amtrak 524 with CabCar #8311 & F59PHI #2002. Nice, friendly engineer on #8311 ! Note the lengthened six car consist versus the typical four or five in accommodation for the upcoming Thanksgiving travel period. This will be the case with a couple of Capitol Corridor trains on this day. Train 3 : ACE #3 with F40PH-3C #3102 & CabCar #3308. Train 4 : Amtrak 523 with F59PHI #2011 & CabCar #6962. Note the lengthened seven car consist; a rather rare sight to see any Capitol Corridor train with seven cars, let alone six cars. Train 5 : ACE #5 with F40PH-3C #3101 & CabCar #3303. Great K5LA action from the engineer on #3101 ! Train 6 : ACE #7 with F40PH-3C #3105 & CabCar #3302. Train 7 : Amtrak 525 with F59PHI #2012 & CabCar #6963. Definitely some loud horn action from the engineer on #2012 for sure ! Train 8 : Amtrak 527 with SC-44 #2101 & CabCar #6961. Train 9 : Amtrak 528 with CabCar #8309 & F59PHI #2001. Nice horn action from the engineer arriving into and departing Fremont. Train 10 : Union Pacific ILTLT-20 with SD70M #5208, #4334, C45AH #8211, SD70AH #8897, C45ACCTE #5276, & #5338. Right as I was about to head out, I heard a distant horn and knowing no other passenger trains were scheduled, it had to be a freight, so I booked it back to the platform to catch it coming through ! This train happened to be the daily “Lathrop Shuttle” running from Oakland back to the Lathrop Intermodal Railyard with some good horn action as it passed through town. Thanks for Watching !
