Box Truck Falls in Sinkhole While Unloading! Sinkhole jobs are always some of the most dangerous jobs. Just like an iceberg, what you see from up top is not the entire picture. You'll see what I mean at the end after I get it out and show the sinkhole, how eroded and weak it was directly under the concrete that "looked" decent. To make matters more complicated, this area was directly above a storage area! This left me with limited options on the recovery. Most people would assume to just pull it forward, but that would be horrible. First, you risk puncturing the tires. Second, the truck would just plow through the concrete and damage it even more, which could lead to a bigger sinkhole. My plan was a 2 part job. This consisted of an overhead lift, combined with a winchout at the same time. Since these are rear wheel drive, once I lifted the tires off the ground it would want to roll forward. Using wood to crib it wouldn't work since I was pulling at an extreme angle. My solution was to put the front axle on the underlift and chain bind it. This made it near impossible for the front to move, while I pulled on the rear. Then once the rear axle was out of the hole, I retracted the underlift and swung my boom to get the truck to a safe location. From there, it was as easy as driving forward. Seems like a simple job on paper once you see me do it, but this was incredibly risky and dangerous. For those in the industry you will understand.
