Watch in HD! This is the final video on steering upgrades for my 86 Trans AM. This applies to all 82-92 (Thirdgen) F-body cars. There are several options for upgrading your intermediate steering shaft on these cars. The two most popular are the Astro Van and the Jeep Cherokee steering shafts. The Astro Van shaft is definitely more involved and requires some extra work on your part to fit correctly. You do NOT have to own a welder to do this. You can perform 95% of the work, and just stop by any exhaust or body shop with a welder and I'm betting they'll zap a couple welds on there for you for free. Or slip the guy $5 or some donuts. The rest is 100% average joe friendly. The Jeep shaft requires no major work. I didn't show it, but heating up the center of the shaft is kind of a pain. You MUST work in a well ventilated area. And wear eye and hand protection. The smoke and crap that is produced from melting the "glue" is pretty nasty. I don't know if its toxic...but its nasty. Once you get it collapsing and extending, you are done! Also, the Jeep shaft doesn't have to be from a Cherokee (XJ). Some Grand Cherokee's (ZJ) from the same era will work. Also the pick up version, the Comanche (MJ) has the same shaft as the XJ. Most of the steering box ends are the same across the board, but you have to make sure the DD end is the same size. Be prepared to fight these shafts a bit... Tha's it! Any questions or comments please post! Thanks for watching! Follow Me!!
