Plaster Coving Installation – How To Balance An Internal Mitre This is the tenth video in a series of Quick Coving Tips that explain how to install plaster coving and plaster cornice. A professional plaster coving installer explains how to balance a mitre, or how to fit decorated coving so that the pattern on the cornice continues round a corner. In this video the installer demonstrates the technique on an internal mitre. He assumes the first internal mitre is already cut and in place. Then he takes a measurement from a prominent feature of the pattern (in this example the centre of a rose) along the wall edge. On a second piece of cornice the same distinctive feature of the pattern is located and using the measurement taken earlier this is added to the wall edge. At this new reference point the cornice is squared off using the saw. Then because he is cutting an internal mitre, he takes off the projection measurement the coving from the squared up point along the top edge and marks this point o the plaster coving. He then cuts the cornice with a saw from that new mark diagonally to the squared up point on the wall edge. This creates a perfect 45 degree internal mitre where the pattern flows through and around the corner of the cornice. In the language of a Fibre Hand this is known as balancing the mitre. Typically in a square/rectangular room it will be possible to balance three of the mitres but there will typically be one mitre where it is not possible.
