Today's video features a post-war recording of Franz Grothe's magnificent waltz "Illusion" which he composed for the 1941 melodrama "Illusion" starring Brigitte Horney and Johannes Heesters... "Illusion" was an unusual movie (for that period) about a famous actress, who in the end choses her career over the man she has fallen in love with... Franz Grothe (1908-82) was one of Germany's most succesfull and talented composers... He started out in the 1920s and composed a number of songs for the legendary tenor Richard Tauber. In 1929 he composed the music for "Die Nacht gehört uns" an early talkie starring Hans Albers and Charlotte Ander. His career blossomed in the 1930s and 1940s - an era during which he composed numerous songs for Marta Eggerth, Kirsten Heiberg (his wife) and Marika Rökk. After the war he continued his career and achieved his greatest international succes in 1956 with "Mitternachtsblues" (Midnight Blues). In total he composed the music for 170 movies. He also wrote several operettas and musicals....
