Seminar A Day of Orthodox Spirituality at St Cyril's Coptic Orthodox Theological College, a member institute of Sydney College of Divinity. Arncliffe NSW, 29 July 2019. Abstract: At the end of the Second World War, a group of Orthodox believers started to gather together at the Monastery of All Saints in Bucharest, Romania. The monastery was erected by the martyr hierarch Antim (Anthimos) the Iberian ( = Georgian) in 1713-1715. The clandestine meetings of the group, which has chosen the symbolic patronage of the Burning Bush, continued for a number of years after the war, during the dark age of the communist regime. The group was composed of clergymen, monks, theologians and lay intellectuals of various fields of expertise. They met for common prayer and fellowship under the guidance of a Russian emigre, Father John the Stranger. Father John was a charismatic who imparted gifts on several members of the group. During the meetings, the members of the group would present their ideas and samples of their creativity, receiving specialised as well as spiritual feedback. Some were poets and novelists, others composers, others ikon-makers. The Burning Bush group has produced a body of Christian literature, philosophy, visual art and music, which recently has begun to be rediscovered, analysed and promoted. Most members of the group have suffered persecution, imprisonment and a martyr's death at the hands of the communists. Their luminous example confirms once again that Christian spirituality can become a fertile framework for the encounter between people of various expertise, where their work and life can be transfigured into witnesses of the Gospel. My talk offers a summary of the above, in the hope that the wisdom of the Burning Bush group may inspire ways ahead for the dissemination of Orthodox spirituality in the Antipodes.
