Edgar B. Speer – Another popular “footer” admired by ship fans, she was built in 1980 by the American Shipbuilding Co., Lorain, OH, as a self-unloading bulk carrier. Edgar B. Speer is a self-unloading vessel, but it has a type of self unloading mechanism that is different from most ships on the Great Lakes. This short boom extends straight out over the side, which means it has a very short reach. This type of boom limits the ports that the Speer can visit for unloading to just two -- either Gary, IN and Conneaut, OH. She’s 1,004’ in length, 105’ in beam. She has a capacity of 73,700 tons. She’s powered by twin Pielstick – 18PC-3V-400 18-cylinder Diesel engines, producing a total of 19,260 bhp turning 2 changeable pitch propellers.
