While many thriller shows will hook you within the first 10 minutes, keeping the viewers' attention can be a harder task. Like many of the best TV anthology series, The Sinner does this through its main character, Detective Harry Ambrose, who is so compelling that he commands the screen throughout all four seasons. Bringing something new to the table is a relatively rare achievement for TV thrillers today. Even the best and most suspenseful TV thrillers often share the same fault, which is that they rely on the same tired tropes, shocks, and reveals. However, The Sinner takes a major risk that sets it apart from other detective shows and thrillers, and this pays off. The Sinner Made A Risky Choice Revealing The Killer At The Beginning Of Each Season The Sinner is a thriller with a difference that makes it outshine Sherlock as a detective show. Unlike most crime thrillers, which focus on the detective's quest to catch the killer, The Sinner takes a major mystery away from the beginning. Each season begins by revealing the identity of the killer, changing the question of "whodunit?" to "whydunit?" The Sinner's unusual approach might take away the common detective show mystery, but it adds several more in its place. Season 1 of The Sinner features the overlooked Jessica Biel in a fantastic performance as a woman who stabs a man to death. Revealing such an unlikely killer immediately ensured that viewers would be intrigued by her motives and story. The 4-Season Thriller Series Was More Interesting With Its Unique Approach Similar formats have worked before with other procedural shows. Lie to Me queried the reason for a suspect's lie rather than investigating whether they are lying in the first place, and Hannibal sometimes revealed the killer early on. That said, The Sinner takes a much more in-depth approach to exploring the psychological state and background of the killer, making it an excellent character study.
