In this video series of police radar encounters, we test the speed acquisition range of police radar in constant-on patrolling operation (moving C/O radar)—using a Kustom Signals Raptor RP–1 K-band mobile unit. Our real-world tests show there are plenty of opportunities to out brake moving C/O police radar. As our instant-on patrolling police radar video also demonstrated, the targeting range of the Kustom RP-1 was reduced substantially anywhere from 55% to 70% in moving mode relative to its stationary operation. This bodes well for a radar detector user when approaching a patrol vehicle that’s operating police radar in constant-on mode. In our case it was 2700 to 4000 feet in stationary versus only 1200 feet while patrolling. Similar results to our instant-on tests. Radar detection ranges can still be compressed if you approach a patrol vehicle from around a bend or cresting over a hill or both. So it’s not always a slam dunk. But most sensitive radar detectors with at least moderating quick responsiveness should provide adequate protection. Another phenomenon that these tests demonstrate is that a police radar’s range is affected by the type of vehicle you’re driving as well as the color as both have an impact on the radar cross-section of any given vehicle. Vehicles with higher radar cross-sections can have their speed detected at farther distances than others with lower radar cross-sections.
